The area and the river are called Hamma Hamma, but this restaurant is called Hama Hama Oyster Saloon…. Apparently, the founder decided to use only one “m” to save on printer ink 😂 That was one of many fun / interesting things I learned! The class was downright amazing… Our instructor Morgan taught us so much about the local oysters, what the different types are, where they are from, farming methods etc. etc.
My brother in law taught me how to shuck oysters a couple years ago, so I had an idea, but…that was a couple years ago so I forgot a lot, and also learned a lot of cool tips / tricks from Morgan…like oyster lollipop lol, so now Im kind of an unstoppable shucking queen 👑 One thing I did not forget was my brother in law always saying “Get your nose in there to make sure its fresh!!!” lol These were incredibly fresh for sure though, straight out of the water just a few feet away.
I gave the different sauces a try, tried the Douglas Fir drops first thinking its the one Id like the least, and it was surprisingly good! Like, really good! The rose petal was really nice too…but, after giving those a try, I just stuck to basics…a bit of lemon and I was good to go. We got to try about 7 different varieties of oyster…I shucked and ate sooo many oysters! Hamma Hamma were definitely my favorite one though…sooooo goooood!!!!
Afterwards, we got a tour of the facilities and the area where the oysters are farmed, it was such a really cool operation. I had no idea what to expect, and still it was beyond anything I could have expected. Its also incredibly pristine and shiny and so clean! I mean, of course but, this is seafood after all. The whole set up was really impressive! I’m so sad I didn’t get a pic of oyster mountain!!! They toss all the shells into a HUGE pile where it gets bleached and sanitized by the sun, before they are slid down into the canal to help with the eco system.
Afterwards, my sis and bil came to say hi to Lincon and check out the van. I have a camera set up to be able to check on him, and he was so relaxed in there. Anytime we looked to see how he was doing throughout the class, he was in a new sleeping spot, just chilling! Felt nice to give them a tour to check everything out…and they seemed to really like my new lil home on wheels 🥰
